English for Effective Communication Course
Level 1: Basic English Structures (candidate with <450 TOEIC)

Course goals:

  •  Understand basic everyday expressions and short, simple texts.
  •  Engage in simple oral and written communication in order to provide and obtain information.
  •  Construct very basic and simple sentences.
  •  Demonstrate limited controls of essential grammatical structures.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  •  Interpret and control a narrow range of isolated words and phrases dealing with everyday topics including jobs, family, sports, food and drink, clothes, languages and nationalities.
  •  Locate information and understand main ideas in a short, simple written text.
  •  Identify main ideas from a conversation or speech on a familiar topic.
  •  Use simple forms of polite expressions to establish basic social contact and to perform everyday functions including making requests and offers, conducting simple phone conversations, asking and telling time, giving simple directions, asking about price, ordering a meal, etc.
  •  Use a narrow range of positive and negative adjectives to describe objects, people and places.
  •  Exchange information by forming and responding to simple questions.
  •  Produce simple sentences using the correct word order and punctuation marks.
  •  Use capital and lower case letters accurately in writing.
  •  Construct a short guided paragraph on a familiar topic concerning home, family, friends and holidays.
  •  Use the basic tenses including the present and past simple, and present continuous correctly.
  •  Use the basic auxiliary verbs (am/is/are/was/were/can) and a range of regular and irregular verbs.
  •  Demonstrate awareness of the essential grammatical features and functions including questions and negatives, plural nouns, frequency adverbs, possessives, pronouns and determiners.

Assessment:

  •  Student performance will be based on examinations in comprehension and usage (70%), writing (10%), speaking (10%) and continuous assessment (10%).

Level 2: Intermediate English Structures (candidate with >450 TOEIC but <650)

Course goals:

  •  To improve speaking and listening skills necessary for everyday living and for classroom, academic, and cultural situations.
  •  To practice and improve the listening and speaking skills required for service interactions.
  •  To strengthen your ability to monitor and evaluate your own progress.
  •  To improve your self-confidence in your ability to communicate.
  •  To address problem areas in pronunciation.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  •  To recognize the communicative purpose of discourse according to the situation, speakers, and purposes.
  •  To correctly interpret mood, tone, and point-of-view in conversational and formal discourse.
  •  To detect key words identifying topic and related words.
  •  To demonstrate some familiarity with everyday slang and idioms.
  •  To develop greater confidence in speaking in class.
  •  To present, support and defend an opinion or point-of-view in a logical manner.
  •  To prepare and deliver a short informal talk.
  •  To prepare and participate in an individual, panel, or group presentation.
  •  To ask for constructive and focused feedback related to their jobs.

Assessment:

  •  Student performance will be based on examinations in comprehension and usage (70%), writing (10%), speaking (10%) and continuous assessment (10%).
Level 3: Functional English for work

Course goals:

  •  Students will be given challenging real-world projects and assignments. High quality work is expected, and students will be given opportunities to re-do work until it meets standards.
  •  Classroom activities will include reading, writing, research, projects and problem solving. Major projects will be presented to the class.
  •  Students will often work collaboratively, but will be expected to complete individual assignments.
  •  Assessment methods will be pieces of writing, tests, quizzes, oral and written research reports/projects, reading comprehension activities, and projects.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  •  The student will demonstrate the ability to respond to a text/speaker through making connections and critical connections and critical analysis.
  •  The student will demonstrate the ability to compose in a variety of genres by developing content, using specific forms, and selecting appropriate language suitable for a particular audience and purpose.
  •  The student will demonstrate the ability to analyze, evaluate, and demonstrate speaking skills.
  •  The student will demonstrate the ability to apply listening strategies.
  •  The student will demonstrate the ability to expand his or her vocabulary through multiple methods.
  •  The student will be guided and taught to demonstrate the TOEIC examination.
  •  The student will be guided of how to prepare for the job interview (Individual/group).

Assessment:

  •  Student performance will be based on examinations in comprehension and usage (70%), writing (10%), speaking (10%) and continuous assessment (10%).
